Simulation of flow redistribution in 7 × 7 ballooned fuel bundle experiments using DRACCAR code

IRSN has developed DRACCAR code in order to model loss of coolant accidents (LOCA) a light water nuclear reactor. The physics during hypothetical accident involves several phenomena such as heat and mass transfers, fluid dynamics, mechanics, chemistry. Even if simulation requires modeling these conjugated processes, it is important validate them separately first—for example, dynamics calculations the flow redistribution after clad ballooning that can occur LOCA. In this paper, we present simulations two 7 × ballooned bundles with different blockage, lengths rates, one laminar other turbulent. results for axial velocities are compared experimental data obtained by MRI techniques on MASCARA facility. show that, most sub-channels studied, capable predicting correctly velocity profiles both rates. general, provided fairly accurate estimates velocity, especially intact less-blocked sub-channels. For blocked subchannel, able estimate majority margin ±15% respect values, except bundle at where only 20% calculated were found within margin.
